From feeding feathered friends with apples and seeds to stirring up fizzing potions in witches cauldrons, these activities invite kids to see a little magic in both the natural world and their own imagination.  After all, magic is everywhere, whether it stirs from the charm of little critters or rises in a bubbling brew.

Woodland Wonders

A sweet part of fall is watching the birds and little critters gather outside your window. To bring them even closer, try making a simple, classic homemade bird feeder. Just slice an apple in half and use a spoon to hollow out the core. Fill the center with a mix of peanut butter and birdseed, then use string or twine to hang the apple from a nearby tree branch.

Now all that’s left to do is sit back and watch as your outdoor friends discover their seasonal treat.

Potion Magic

This simple activity is a favorite in our home, made even better because the ingredients are usually already on hand. All you’ll need is baking soda and vinegar. For a touch of extra wonder, add food coloring, glitter, playful bowls (or cauldrons), and droppers for pouring.

Start by placing the food coloring at the bottom of the bowl, then cover it with enough baking soda to hide the colorful surprise. If you’re using glitter, sprinkle it on top of the baking soda like fairy dust. Now invite the kids to add vinegar, and watch their faces light up as their potion begins to bubble, fizz, and overflow with magic.

Encourage them to mix colors, experiment with new combinations, and let their imaginations run wild as they create potions all their own.
