A Weekly Ritual for a Softer Transition

ree

The mad rush of school and fall is drawing near. Before we begin the next busy season, I encourage you to create a simple evening ritual — just once a week in August — that becomes a sacred pause between summer’s end and fall’s beginning. A candlelit dinner, a quiet sky, and a moment of peace before the rush.

A Candlelit Family Dinner:

Set the table with soft lighting (real or battery candles), even just for pizza. Let the kids light the candles or place a flower in a jar — something symbolic to mark the “ritual” of winding down. Use a tablecloth or cloth napkins, turn on a calming playlist, and open a window for a warm breeze. While you are at the table, go around the table and ask each person a question about their day. It can be a simple “What was the best part of your day?” or something deeper, “What’s something you’re looking forward to in fall? Or, What made you feel peaceful today?”

After-Dinner Stargazing

Step outside and lie on the grass with a blanket or sit on the porch. Bring out a warm drink or simple dessert and look at the stars. Enjoy the crickets and quiet.

This weekly pause is as much for the parents as it is for the kids. Through slowing down, we are gently anchored in presence, connection, and seasonal rhythm.

Let this be the season where busy doesn’t rush in all at once.
